Ways to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

Lindsey Patterson
With climate change affecting every aspect of our lives, it is important to try and do our part on an individual level to help save the environment. With these modifications, you will be able to use less waste, and contribute to helping the planet as well.

Utilize Reusable Products

Eco-friendly products that are stylish, and more importantly, reusable, are a growing trend within consumer culture today. Some of the most well-known items include HydroFlask, a metal thermos that can keep liquids ice cold and coffee piping hot, as well as reusable straws that are washable.
If you plan your day, you can consume much less plastic simply by bringing items like your own utensils. You will also cut down on trash and clutter in your home, and teach your children that reusable is a better option.

Get Involved with Climate Change Organizations

There are many ways that you can find other people who are passionate about combating climate change, and connect with them. Try to find organizations that align with your values, such as the Climate Leadership Council, which has a mission of redistributing carbon dividends.
Find out about events or meetings in your area where you can learn more about the movement, and how you can individually participate as well.

Consider an Electric or Hybrid Vehicle

Although it may seem like a significant investment, electric cars are clearly the vehicle of the future. More and more charging stations are appearing in major metropolitan areas, so electric car users do not have to worry about traveling far to fill their batteries.
If you want an alternative to a fully electric vehicle but you still want to be more environmentally conscious, consider purchasing a hybrid car instead, which runs on a combination of electric energy and fuel. Many major car manufacturers have hybrid vehicles already on the market.

Travel Less by Air

Recent studies have shown that airplanes are one of the biggest producers of carbon, and therefore are influential in the climate changes occurring on our planet. Sometimes air travel is unavoidable, but next time you are booking a trip, think about other possible ways to travel, that may be less taxing on the environment.
Usually these options, like a road trip, traveling by boat or by train, are also cheaper, so you can save money as well as feel better about your individual impact on the environment.

Reduce Intake of Beef

Cows are a huge producer of methane, which is a major factor in climate change. Therefore, it has been advised that one of the best things you can do on a personal level is to eat less beef. You do not have to go onto an entirely plant-based diet in order to reduce your carbon footprint.
Simply trading in a cheeseburger for a chicken sandwich a few times a month will have a great effect. Although beef is the most integral, experts recommend trying to consume less meat in general, as plants generally require less resources, and feed more people.

Try Hemp-Based Products

Hemp is an amazing and versatile plant that grows very efficiently, and uses less resources than even regular trees. Another attractive trait of hemp is that it is biodegradable, meaning that it will be cheaper to replace plastic in the future, and will not clog up oceans or landfills as well.
Even when plastic does break down, it still leaves micro plastic, which is a major polluter of the ocean. Therefore, try to buy as many hemp-based products as possible, so that you are giving plastic companies less business, and everything you are purchasing will biodegrade naturally.
You do not have to take drastic steps to eliminate your carbon footprint and help the battle against climate change. With these tips, you will be able to make necessary changes in your habits and purchasing choices, so that you can be better informed and conscious about humanity's affect on this growing issue.
